About the event

Glass Box Projects is pleased to present “Not Being” and “WALL COVERINGS” a short film and a series of paintings by Tehran based artist Pooya Razi.

Pooya Razi (b. 1984) holds a BA in Painting from the Art University  of Tehran. Razi's paintings have been exhibited in Tehran, Paris, New  York, and Dubai. He started making films in 2012 and his first animated  short film was nominated for the Grand Prize at Oberhausen  International Short Film Festival. Razi's short films have been officially  selected for some major international short film festivals. In  particular, Clermont-Ferrand Short Film Festival 2015, Festival du  nouveau cinéma, Montreal, Canada. Glasgow Film Festival, Glasgow,  Scotland, 2015. He also won the award for the best experimental film  from the 35th Tehran International Short Film Festival and the 7th  Khorshid film festival.

The works presented at Glass Box Projects by Razi focuses on the  subject of immigration in hopes of a better life. The first time  presented in the gallery space, "WALL COVERINGS" highlights a very  specific time in Iranian political history. In 2009, after the  presidential election and the mass protests in Iran, many young Iranians  decided to leave their country. In the eyes of a great number of  Iranians, the result of the presidential election manifested the loss of  hope. In "Not Being," Razi is looking at the same subject through the  lens of a camera. In recent years, sociopolitical circumstances have  increased the rate of emigration, making separation a routine in daily  lives. This film attempts to examine the experience from the viewpoint  of the person who stays behind. Being perceptive of life around him,  Razi’s work magnifies the intricate everyday events that have been  normalized in contemporary Iranian society. "Not Being" was screened at  Festival du nouveau cinéma, Montreal, Canada in 2019.

The Glass Box is an alternative presentation space for national and international artists. Located in a residence on the unceded territories of the xmkwy"m (Musqueam), Skwxw7mesh (Squamish), St:l and Sl"lwta"/Selilwitulh nations, Glass Box project(s) presents experimental artworks with the aim of generating new ideas and conversations.
